Bearettes March Past McMinn County To District Championship

CHARLESTON, Tenn. — The Bradley Central Bearettes moved on to their 10th straight district tournament championship appearance with a 71-28 victory over McMinn County on Saturday afternoon from Walker Valley High School.

Anna Walker came away with a game-high 28 points and eight rebounds to go with a pair of blocks. Anna Muhonen rounded out double-digit scorers for the Bearettes with 12 points and Jamia Williams recorded a contest-high five assists.

Williams got the scoring started after going coast-to-coast on a rebound 53 seconds in to spark a 9-1 run and jump out to an early lead. Bradley (24-3) continued to pour it on extending their lead to double digits with a Walker three and McMinn (13-14) cut it back to eight as the Bearettes ended the quarter with a 14-6 advantage.

In the second frame, Bradley Central took advantage of a perfect (8-for-8) free-throw performance to stretch the lead heading into the half. Bradley extended its lead back to double digits with a pair of Alexis Barnes shots from the charity stripe. With 1:05 to go Walker hit another pair of free-throws to extend the lead to 19 and head into the break up 30-11.

Bradley outscored the Lady Cherokees 19-7 in the third and take a 31 point lead into the fourth. The Bearettes had their largest run of the game in the frame jumpstarted by a Barnes layup with 6:12 remaining in the quarter. Walker followed it up with a 3-pointer made two buckets and a free-throw to account for the 10-0 spurt and take a 29 point lead with 1:55 to go.

In the fourth, Hannah Jones hit her first career three from an Amelia Reuter assist to give the Bearettes a 37 point lead and force the mercy rule. Karsee Weber followed suit with 16 seconds left with a three of her own to take their largest lead of the night at 43 points and wrap up the game with a 71-28 victory.

Peyton Oliver led McMinn County with 13 points. Oliver and Addie Smith paced the Lady Cherokees with five rebounds each.

Bradley Central won the battle of the boards 36-24. Bradley also took advantage of 14 McMinn turnovers and outscored their opponents 14-2 off turnovers. The Bearettes held a 26-10 edge in the paint, 21-6 on second-chance scoring off 13 Bradley offensive boards. The top-seeded Bearettes outscored their counterparts 13-4 in fast breaks and 18-6 in bench scoring.

Bradley recorded 20 assists on 24 made baskets shooting 47.1 percent (24-for-51) from the floor and 10-for-24 (41.7 percent) from 3-point range. The Bearettes took advantage of their shots from the charity stripe going 13-of-15 (86.7 percent) in the contest.

McMinn County shot 27.5 percent (11-for-40) overall and went 3-of-12 (25 percent) from beyond the arc. The Lady Cherokees struggled from the free-throw line going 3-of-8 (37.5 percent) in the game.

Bradley Central will be back in action on Monday as they take on East Hamilton in the district championship at Walker Valley High School. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
