Bearettes Extend District Winning Streak With Win Over McMinn County

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — The No. 1 Bradley Central Bearettes claimed a, 60-48, win over district rival McMinn County on Friday evening from inside Jim Smiddy Arena.

Jamaryn Blair was a rebound shy from a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Bearettes in both categories. Anna Muhonen was the next leading scorer with 16 points of her own to go with four rebounds and a block. Anna Walker produced 14 points and eight rebounds while dishing out four assists and blocking a shot.

Bradley (12-3, 4-0 District 5 AAA) opened up the game with a, 13-1, run jump-started by a Muhonnen layup from a Cambree Mayo pass and capped off with a Muhonen layup with the help of a Kelsey Carman assist. McMinn County (7-8, 2-3 District 5 AAA) cut the lead to single digits and the Bearettes took a, 17-8, lead after one quarter.

The second quarter was an even back-and-forth affair as both teams scored 18 points in the frame and Bradley went into the half with a nine-point edge.

The third period looked similar to the second as both teams had answers for each other scoring 13 points each and the Bearettes held steady heading into the fourth.

The hosts were finally able to stretch the lead out in the fourth. Walker hit a pair of free-throws to extend the lead to double-digits for good with 6:27 left and extended it to 14 on a Walker layup with 5:02 to go. The Lady Cherokees answered, cutting the lead to 10 on a pair of Paige Manney free-throws with 3:18 remaining. Bradley answered with a, 5-0, spurt to stretch the lead to 15, the largest of the night, and the Bearettes wrapped up the contest with a, 60-48, victory.

Manney paced McMinn with 14 points off the bench and Peytyn Oliver pulled down a team-high five rebounds. Whitney Green was a force for the Lady Cherokee defense forcing a game-high six steals.

Bradley cleaned up in the specialty stats outscoring the guests off turnovers (17-7), in the paint (32-10), on second chances (16-9), and on fast breaks (12-5).

McMinn shot 15-for-40 (37.5 percent) from the floor but was able to hit 8-of-21 (38.1 percent) of its 3-pointers. The Lady Cherokees were 10-for-14 (71.4 percent) from the free-throw line.
