CLEVELAND, Tenn. — The Bradley Central Bearettes advanced to their third straight state tournament appearance on Saturday with a 72-64 win over Tullahoma inside Jim Smiddy Arena.
Anna Walker came close to another double-double with 25 points and nine rebounds to lead the Bearettes in both categories. Alexis Barnes was the next leading scorer with 16 points. Sloan Carpenter and Kelsey Carman rounded out double-digit scorers with 10 each.
Bradley Central (29-3) used the first three quarters to stretch its lead to 12 before a showdown in the fourth.
Barnes hit a layup 15 seconds into the final frame to extend the lead to 14 and Tullahoma (25-10) slowly began to chip away. Julia Duncan trimmed the lead to four on a conventional 3-point play and cut it two following a pair of technical foul free-throws.
The Bearettes answered with a stop from an Anna Muhonen block and a Walker rebound to spark a 6-0 run. Walker hit a layup on the next possession and Alexis Barnes hit a pair from the line on the ensuing possession. Cambree Mayo and Carpenter hit one free-throw each to round of the run and take an eight-point lead.
The Wildcats chipped away again with a Duncan jumper to cut the lead to four with 31 seconds remaining. The Bearettes hit the final four free-throws to seal the win and come away with the 72-64 victory.
Duncan paced the Tullahoma squad with 23 points and Kailyn Farrell scored 18 of her own. Jessica Edde was the final Wildcat in double digits with 10 points. Tyana Hardin led the team with five rebounds and Farrell dished out six assists.
Walker had a game-high nine rebounds and Carpenter and Mayo pulled down four boards each. Carpenter, Mayo, Barnes, and Walker had two assists apiece and Kelsey Carman copped the only two Bradley steals in the contest. Barnes and Walker recorded two blocks each.
The Bearettes took advantage of the Tullahoma turnovers outscoring their opponents 15-12 off turnovers. Bradley won the battle in the paint 28-26, and the battle of the boards 24-21. The Bearettes used their speed to claim fast-break points 10-9 and used Carman’s 10 points for a 10-4 advantage in bench scoring.
Tullahoma shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) overall and went 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) from 3-point range. The Wildcats shot 83.3 percent (10-for-12) from the free-throw line.
The Bearettes went 23-for-37 (62.2 percent) overall and an even better 7-for-11 (63.6 percent) from beyond the arc. Bradley took advantage of their chances at the line going 19-for-24 (79.2 percent).
Bradley Central will be back in action on Wednesday at the Murphy Center in the 2020 TSSAA AAA State tournament. The opponent and time will be announced on Sunday following the blind draw involving the eight teams remaining.
