Bradley Central Completes Comeback Over East Hamilton In Overtime

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — The Bradley Central Bearettes came back and defeated East Hamilton, 54-50, in overtime to remain unbeaten in District 5 AAA action on Tuesday evening from Jim Smiddy Arena.

Jamaryn Blair threw up a prayer with seconds remaining and Anna Walker grabbed the putback and made a layup at the buzzer to even things at 47 and force overtime.

In the overtime period, Madison Hayes got the scoring started with a conventional 3-point play but that would be all they could get in the extra frame. The Bearettes answered with a 3-pointer from Walker to even things up with three minutes to go and Anna Muhonen gave Bradley (6-2, 2-0 District 5 AAA) the lead on a layup with just under 1:30 to go. 

After the two teams struggled to score the remaining of the period Muhonen came up with a block and Jamia Williams came up with the rebound and drew a give foul with 13 seconds to go. Williams went up to the line and hit both free throws to ice the game and come away with the 54-50 victory.

Muhonen led the Bradley charge with a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds. Blair threw in 16 points of her own while pulling down six rebounds, dishing out a pair of assists, and drawing seven fouls. Walker had 12 points, including the game-tying basket. Cambree Mayo led the Bearettes with five of the team’s nine assists. 

Bradley Central led all of 1:28 of the game and their largest lead was four with 13 seconds to go.

East Hamilton (6-6, 2-1 District 5 AAA) forced a turnover on the first possession and scored 14 seconds later to take the lead they would not give up until overtime as they methodically came out with an 18-12 edge after the first.

Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket as the Lady Hurricanes outscored the hosts, 8-6, in the second frame holding a 26-18 advantage into the break.

Bradley was able to keep things the same in the third as the two teams scored 12 points each before the comeback began.

In the fourth, the Bearettes began to slowly chip away at the lead cutting the lead to one on a pair of Blair free throws with 2:54 to go but East Ham answered with a jumper in the paint to stretch the lead back to three.

On the next possession, Bradley cut it to one with a Blair jumper and Hayes hit one of two free throws for a 47-45 lead with 1:50 remaining. After Jamia Williams copped a steal with 15 seconds to go and the Lady Hurricanes committed take fouls before Walker hit the putback at the buzzer and the comeback ensued.

Hayes led East Hamilton with an unconventional double-double with 27 points and 10 fouls drawn to go with five rebounds, four steals, and a pair of assists. Eliziah Laboo led the guests with 12 rebounds, nine coming on the defensive boards, to go with seven points. 

The Lady Hurricanes outscored Bradley, 9-7, in points off turnovers. Bradley came out on top in the paint (22-20), second-chance scoring (14-5), fast-break points (7-2), and bench scoring (3-1).

East Hamilton shot 16-for-46 (38.8 percent) overall including a cold, 1-of-7 (14.3 percent) in overtime. The Lady Hurricanes were 5-for-18 (27.8 percent) from 3-point range and a tough 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) from the charity stripe.

Bradley Central shot 41.3 percent (19-of-46) overall but struggled from distance going 3-of-22 (13.6 percent). The Bearettes made up for it from the line going 13-of-18 (72.2 percent).

Bradley will be back in action on Thursday as they take on Bearden. The game is being played as part of the 2019 Five Star Preps Classic at Farragut High School. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
