DECATUR, Tenn. — The Bradley Central Bearettes forced overtime on a last possession shot and went on to win in overtime 59-55 over Meigs County on Thursday evening from Meigs County High School.
After leading by as much as 12 the Bearettes allowed Meigs (14-7) to take their first lead of the game on an Ansley Wade bucket with 5:25 remaining in regulation. Bradley (17-3) answered with a 7-2 run to take a four-point lead with 1:54 thanks to an Anna Muhonen basket. The Tigers responded with an 8-2 run of their own capped off by a pair of Jacelyn Stone free-throws with 13 seconds to go to claim a 54-52 lead.
After Meigs took a couple of take fouls Bradley called a timeout with nine seconds remaining to set up one final play. Three seconds later Anna Walker throws up a shot that bounces on the rim and in to knot things a 54 and force overtime.
In the overtime period, both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net until an Ella Crowder broke the tie making 1-of-2 from the line with 1:18 left. After allowing an offensive rebound then forcing a turnover the Bearettes grabbed the lead with a Muhonen bucket and looked to add one more to complete the old fashioned 3-point play. The junior post missed the ensuing free-throw but Bradley held on the defensive end and hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 59-55 victory.
Muhonen poured in a career-high 30 points on 13-of-16 shooting and was one rebound short of a double-double with nine boards to go with three blocks. Walker rounded out the Bearette double-digit scorers with 13. Jamia Williams and Cambree Mayo led the way with five assists and Williams had a team-high four steals. Alexis Barnes was a force to deal with down low as she swatted five shots in the contest.
After scoring the games first 11 points it looked as if Bradley would be in the driver’s seat the rest of the way. Meigs answered though with a 14-5 run to wrap up the quarter and cut the lead to just two points.
The teams traded baskets throughout the second the Bearettes lost one point of ground and headed into the locker room up 26-25.
After the halftime break, Bradley came out firing on all cylinders scoring the first nine points in the third. The Bearettes took advantage in the third extending the lead to 12 on a Muhonen layup from a Williams assist with 2:22 left in the quarter. The hosts answered trimmed the lead to six with a 6-0 run to wrap up the third and continued cutting the lead to set up the final moments.
Stone led all Meigs scorers with 17 points and Wade was the only other player in double figures with 10. Brianna Bales led the team with six rebounds and Jaci Powell paced the Tigers with four assists.
Bradley used their size to outscore their opponents in the paint 42-24 and outrebound the hosts 31-28 in the contest.
Meigs shot 30.4 percent (17-for-56) overall and 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from 3-point range. The Tigers shot 66.7 percent (18-for-27) from the free-throw line.
The Bearettes went 24-for-37 (64.9 percent) from the floor and 2-of-5 (40 percent) from beyond the arc. Bradley struggled from the free-throw line shooting 50 percent (9-for-18) from the line.
Bradley Central will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Raider Arena to take on cross-town rival Cleveland at 6 p.m.
