Bradley Central Jumps Back Into District Play With Win Over Walker Valley

CHARLESTON, Tenn. — The top-ranked Bradley Central Bearettes took down cross-county rival Walker Valley, 61-35, on Tuesday evening from Walker Valley High School.

Five Bearettes were in double-figure scoring in a balanced attack.

Anna Walker paced all scorers with 19 points while pulling down four rebounds and blocking two shots. Anna Muhonen had 12 points of her own and a team-high five boards. Jamaryn Blair threw in 11 points and Cambree Mayo rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points to go with a game-high four steals.

Bradley (11-3, 3-0 District 5 AAA) opened up the game with a Muhonen layup on the opening possession after a pair of offensive boards to jumpstart a, 7-0, run. The Bearettes extended their lead to 10 on a Muhonen layup off a Jamia Williams assist with 4:15 left in the opening quarter of play. The Mustangs trimmed the lead back to seven to wrap up the quarter and Bradley Central finished the first quarter up, 17-10.

The guests extended their lead in the second, outscoring Walker Valley (7-10, 1-2 District 5 AAA), 15-2, in the frame. The Bearettes held the Mustangs to 1-of-6 (16.7 percent) and forced 11 turnovers while going 8-for-9 (88.9 percent) to take a 20 point lead into the halftime break.

In the third Bradley continued to pour it on scoring the first six points to wrap up a, 14-0, run and extend their lead to 26 with 5:32 to go in the third. The Bearettes did not stop there as they continued to stretch their lead to the largest of the night on a Walker 3-pointer from an Amelia Reuter assist with 2:36 to go and Bradley went into the fourth with a, 51-20, advantage.

Walker Valley cut it to 26 multiple times in the fourth but could not break down the lead past that as the Bearettes held on for the, 61-35, victory.

Laney Harris paced the Mustang offense with nine points and Emma Bently pulled down a team-high six rebounds while dishing out a squad-high three assists.

Bradley took advantage of 24 Walker Valley turnovers, outscoring their opponents, 30-2, in points off turnovers. The Bearettes took advantage of their size and speed, beating the Mustangs in points in the paint (36-14), second-chance scoring (12-7), and fast-break points (20-2).

Walker Valley struggled to hit a bucket going 10-for-35 (28.6 percent) from the floor and shot 21.4 percent (3-for-14) from 3-point range. The Mustangs shot well from the free-throw line going 12-for-15 (80 percent).
