NAPLES, Fla. — The Bradley Central Bearettes opened up the 2019 Naples Holiday Shootout with a, 57-49, win over St. Rose (N.J.) on the campus of Barron Collier High School early Saturday morning.
Anna Muohnen posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Anna Walker paced the Bearette scoring with 21.
Jamaryn Blair proved to find the open person with six assists to go with eight points and five boards for Bradley (9-2)
St. Rose (2-1) took an early lead before the Bearettes came back over the final three quarters.
Jamia Williams hit a 3-pointer off a Cambree Mayo assist for the first bucket of the game and the only lead Bradley had in the first half. St. Rose answered with an, 11-0, run to jump out to a six-point lead before wrapping up the quarter with a, 16-11, advantage.
The Bearettes trimmed four points off the lead in the second quarter outscoring their opponents, 13-9, in the frame. The Purple Roses answered first stretching their lead to just 38 seconds in. Bradley used a, 6-0, with all six points from Walker, to cut it two with 4:34 remaining. After the two teams played back-and-forth it was Walker with the old fashioned 3-point play to trim it to just one going into the break.
Walker continued to prove her value sinking a three to give Bradley a lead to open up the third period. The New Jersey squad regained the lead just two minutes later on a Maureen Stapleton 3-pointer to start the see-saw affair. After a pair of ties, Blair hit a three and Walker hit a fastbreak layup to take a five-point lead and the Bearettes headed into the fourth with a, 37-34, edge.
The Purple Roses hit a 3-pointer on their first possession of the fourth and Stapleton hit a fastbreak three off a Brynn Farrell assist with 5:12 remaining. Muhonen evened the game at 42 off an Alexis Barnes assist with 4:39 left and regained the lead for good after Blair hit the second of two free-throws with 3:53 to go. Muhonen stretched the lead to three after a missed basket by the opposition and the Bearettes hit free throws down the stretch to hold on for the, 57-49, victory.
Farrell paced the Purple Roses with 21 points. Stapleton and Farrell dished out four assists each and Abby Antognoli led all players with six assists. Antognoli and Makayla Andrews led the New Jersey team with seven rebounds each. Stapleton and Andrews were the next lead leading scorers with nine points by both players.
Bradley won the battle of the boards, 29-26, while forcing 15 turnovers.
The Bearettes took advantage of the turnovers outscoring St. Rose, 24-15 off turnovers and, 24-22, in the paint. Bradley held a, 2-0, edge in second-chance scoring and a, 6-5, slight in offensive rebounds. The Bearettes edged out their opponents, 20-18, in fast break scoring in the up-and-down game and the bench outscored their counterparts, 5-0.
St. Rose shot 38.1 percent (16-for-42) overall and 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from 3-point range. The Purple Roses shot a high 80 percent (12-of-15) from the free-throw line.
