Bradley Claims 3rd Place At Naples Holiday Shootout

NAPLES, Fla. — The Bradley Central Bearettes came back and defeated Tampa Bay Techincal (Fla.), 46-43, on Tuesday afternoon from Barron Collier High School.

The Titans regained the lead on a Janiah Baker jumper with 4:15 to go in the game and Cambre Mayo answered with a jumper off an Anna Muhonen pass from an offensive board to regain the lead on the next possession.

The Bearettes answered with a few key defensive stops and scored on the following plays with a Jamia Williams putback and an Anna Walker layup after a turnover and Bradley (10-3) had a five-point advantage with 2:34 to go. Tampa (10-3) scored on the following possession to cut the lead to three with 2:38 left.

After neither team could score the Titans had a chance to tie the game on the last possession before a Williams steal sealed the game and the Bearettes came away with the, 46-43, victory.

Walker led the Bradley offense with 27 points and had a great defensive effort with four steals and a trio of rebounds. Muhonen was the next leading scorer with nine while pulling down a team-high five rebounds. Blair led the way with three assists and four steals.

The Titans quickly jumped out to a five-point lead on the first three possessions before Walker hit a layup just under two minutes in to give Bradley their first points. The teams went back-and-forth the rest of the quarter before Tampa hit a jumper with nine seconds left and ended the first quarter with a, 16-9, advantage.

The Bearettes battled back in the second taking a lead shortly on a Walker fastbreak layup off a steal before Baker converted an old fashioned three-point play just 21 seconds later to regain the lead for the Titans. Muhonen responded with just under a minute to go in the half hitting both free-throws to even the game and the teams went into the break tied at 22.

Tampa struck first in the second half and teams traded buckets in the see-saw third quarter and Bradley came out with a one-point edge before the exciting finish in the fourth.

Baker led the scoring effort for the Titans putting 14 points on the board to go with seven rebounds and two blocks. Jayla Murray led all players with 10 rebounds and added eight points of her own and Jasmine Peaks put in eight points with a trio of assists.

The stout Bradley defense forced 21 Tampa turnovers for 18 points and took advantage of the 10 offensive rebounds for 15 second-chance points. The Bearettes won the battle of speed outscoring the Titans, 14-9, in fast break scoring.

Tampa shot 50 percent (19-for-38) overall but struggled from 3-point range shooting 1-of-11 (9.1 percent). The Titans were 4-for-7 (57.1 percent) from the line.

Bradley hit 37.5 percent (18-of-48) from the floor and 22.2 percent (2-for-9) from distance. The Bearettes hit free-throws when they mattered, going 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) for the game from the charity stripe including a perfect 5-for-5 performance from Muhonen.

The Bearettes return to action on Jan. 7 as they jump back into district competition taking on Walker Valley at 6 p.m.
