Bradley Claims Fifth Straight Region Championship Over Stone Memorial

SPARTA, Tenn. — The Bradley Central Bearettes claimed their fifth consecutive region title with a 55-46 win over Stone Memorial in the title game inside Roy Sewell Gymnasium on the campus of White County High School on Wednesday night.

Cambree Mayo poured in a game and career-high 24 points to go with a team-leading seven boards, two steals, and an assist in the championship effort.

Freshman Sloan Carpenter put a career-high 16 points and five rebounds and Anna Walker, Anna Muhonen, and Kelsey Carman had two assists each. Walker led the team with three steals and Muhonen had a game-high three blocks.

Stone Memorial (28-4) cut the lead to two with an Emma Capps three with 5:48 left in the game and Mayo answered with eight straight points to extend the Bearette lead to 46-36 with just over minutes remaining. Bradley (28-3) held on to the advantage down the stretch going 9-for-10 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes for the championship.

Tessa Miller led the Lady Panthers with an 18 point, 11 rebound double-double, and Capps had a team-high 23 points. Mattie Buck produced a game-high five assists.

It was a back-and-forth affair in the opening quarter with a game of runs. Carpenter got the scoring started on the opening possession with a driving layup and Stone answered with a 10-0 spurt to take their only lead of the game. The Bearettes reclaimed the lead with an 11-0 run that leaked into the second. Alexis Barnes hit a layup from a Muhonen assist and knotted things at 14 with a Mayo 3-pointer. Bradley regained the lead in the final minute with another Carpenter driving layup and the top-seeded Bearettes ended the frame up 16-14.

Carpenter capped off the 11-point spurt with a Carpenter bucket 29 seconds into the second quarter. The Panthers evened things up at 18 with a four-point run and Bradley responded with a 7-0 stretch and the Bearettes went into the locker room up four.

Bradley extended their lead to six in the third before the ensuing fourth quarter and region championship.

The Bearettes took advantage of 11 Stone Memorial turnovers to outscore the Panthers 10-5 off turnovers.

Stone Memorial shot 38.6 percent (17-for-44) from the floor and went 6-for-24 (25 percent) from beyond the arc. The Panthers shot 6-of-7 (85.7 percent) from the charity stripe.

Bradley Central ended the game with a 47.2 percent (17-of-36) overall and had a 7-for-12 (58.3 percent) outing from 3-point range. The Bearettes went 14-for-20 (70 percent) from the free-throw line.

Mayo helped the Bearettes shooting making a career-high five 3-pointers on seven attempts and continued it with a career 9-of-10 performance from the free-throw line.

Bradley Central will be back in action on Saturday as they take on Tullahoma in a sectional contest at 7 p.m. A win on Saturday puts the Bearettes in their third consecutive state tournament.
