2019-20 Season In Review

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — The 2019-20 Bradley Central Bearettes proved to overcome personnel change throughout the season and continued the district winning streak while making their state-record 31st state tournament appearance.

The Bearettes posted a 29-4 overall mark and remained a perfect 12-0 in district 5 AAA action to claim their ninth straight district title.

In post-season action, Bradley marched on claiming their 10th straight district tournament championship and fifth straight region championship before defeating Tullahoma in the sectional round to advance to their third straight state tournament appearance.

Head Coach Jason Reuter was voted district 5 AAA coach of the year for the first time in his career and all five starters were named to the All-District team, the largest number in his tenure.

GAME OF THE YEAR

After losing the first starting point guard of the season on the same day the Bearettes traveled 33 miles to take on Meigs County in an emotionally charged contest that proved to be a turning point for the year.

Anna Muhonen poured in a season-high 30 points and came down with nine rebounds, blocked three shots, and dished out three assists in the come-from-behind overtime victory.

After scoring the first 11 points of the contest the Bearettes looked to be in control of the contest. Megis fought its way back and trimmed the lead to one at the half. Bradley responded taking a 12-point advantage from a Muhonen bucket with 2:22 left in the third and held a six-point lead at the end of three.

The fourth quarter went back-and-forth until the Tigers hit a pair of free throws to take the lead with just 13 seconds to go. After calling a timeout the Bearettes went the length of the floor but Meigs took two fouls to force Bradley to put up only one shot. With six seconds to go Anna Walker put a shot up from the free-throw line with six seconds to go that bounced around the rim before going in and forcing overtime.

In the extra period, the Tigers struck first on a free throw but the Bearettes answered with a Muhonen basket just 30 seconds later. Alexis Barnes hit a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to three with just 28 seconds left and Bradley got a stop on the next possession to hold on for the 58-55 victory.

Muhonen led all players with 30 points on 13-of-16 shooting to go with nine boards. Walker was the next leading Bearette with 13 points of her own and Barnes rounded out the post-play with eight points of her own.

Bradley used their size and speed to outscore the Tigers in the paint 42-24 and on fast breaks 25-10 while outrebounding the hosts 31-28.

With the win, the Bearettes moved to 17-3 and won their eighth contest in a row in the middle of their 20-game win streak.
