Bradley Central Advances Past Cookeville To Region Semis

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — The Bradley Central Bearettes took down Cookeville 57-46 in the opening round of region play inside Jim Smiddy Arena on Friday night.

Cambree Mayo hit a layup with 12 seconds to go in the opening half to give the Bearettes a one-point lead before Bradley (26-3) extended the lead in the third.

Mayo came up with the steal and drove for the easy bucket for the first points of the second half and the hosts ended the quarter on a 12-4 run to stretch their advantage. Mayo hit a three with 4:55 to go and the rest of the quarter turned into the Alexis Barnes and Anna Muhonen show. Muhonen hit a jumper to push the lead to four and Barnes followed it up with a conventional 3-point play. After both hit one free-throw each in the remainder of the quarter, the Bearettes went into the final frame up 40-29.

Cookeville (19-11) slowly started to crawl back into the contest cutting the lead to four with a Bailey Giles three with 2:22 to go. Bradley did not allow the visitors to get any closer, hitting foul shots down the stretch to keep the Lady Cavs at bay and hold on for the elimination game victory.

Barnes wrapped up the contest with a game-high 18 points on 5-of-6 shooting while going 8-for-9 from the line. Mayo finished with 17 of her own with a perfect 6-for-6 free-throw line to go along with six steals performance and Anna Walker rounded out double-digit scorers with 12. Muhonen came close to the double-double with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds Jamia Williams played the all-around game for the Bearettes dishing out four assists, getting four boards, and coming away with three steals in the contest.

Bradley took advantage of their size inside outscoring Cookeville 30-18 in the paint. The Bearettes also used the Lady Cavs turnovers to outscore them 17-8 off turnovers and 16-8 in fast break scoring.

Cookeville shot 37.8 percent (17-for-45) from the floor and went 6-of-24 (25 percent) from 3-point range. The Lady Cavs went 6-of-8 (75 percent) from the free-throw line.

The Bearettes went 17-for-39 (43.6 percent) overall and a hard 2-of-9 (22.2 percent) from beyond the arc. Bradley took used the charity stripe to their advantage shooting 21-of-29 (72.4 percent) at the line.

With the win, Bradley Central advances to the semifinal round of the region tournament. The Bearettes will take on Rhea County on Monday night at Roy Sewell Gymnasium on the campus of White County High School. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST.
