Bradley Claims 10th Straight District Title Over East Hamilton

CHARLESTON, Tenn. — The Bradley Central Bearettes completed their 10th straight district tournament championship on Monday night with a 68-43 win over East Hamilton inside the gymnasium of Walker Valley High School.

Anna Walker put up a team-high 26 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists, and a pair of blocks. Anna Muhonen was the next leading scorer with 14 while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds. Alexis Barnes rounded out the post scoring with nine points and five rebounds and Jamia Williams dished out nine assists to go with seven points.

After scoring the opening eight points and forcing an early East Hamilton (19-12) timeout the Lady Hurricanes finally got on the scoreboard just under two and a half minutes into the game. Bradley (25-3) answered with an 11-2 run and ended the quarter up 19-5.

The Bearettes kept their foot on the gas in the second outscoring East Hamilton 19-2. Bradley started the quarter off on an 11-0 spurt started with a Barnes old fashioned 3-point play and ended with a Walker layup from a Williams assist to wrap up a 20-0 run. The Lady Hurricanes scored their only points on a pair of free throws with 5:11 remaining and the top-seeded Bearettes answered with an 8-0 run capped off by a Muhonen and one to take a 38-7 advantage into the half.

Bradley extended their lead to the largest of the night with a Muhonen layup off a Walker assist to take a 37-point lead with 2:38 to go in the third and went into the fourth with a 59-26 lead.

The Bearettes forced the running clock in the fourth off a Sloan Carpenter three from a Walker pass with 6:11 left and held on for the 68-43 win, and their 10th straight district title.

Madison Hayes recorded a double-double with 31 points and 10 rebounds for East Hamilton. No other Lady Hurricane scored more than three points. Eliziah Laboo recorded the next highest rebound total with five and Dezah Lacy dished out three assists.

The two teams were even on the boards with 36 rebounds each. Bradley forced 15 turnovers on the defensive end outscoring East Hamilton 22-6 off turnovers. Using their size the Bearettes bested their opponents 24-16 in the paint.

Bradley recorded 22 assists while going 25-for-55 (45.5 percent) overall and shot 40 percent (10-for-25) from 3-point range. The Bearettes went 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) from the free-throw line.

East Hamilton struggled from the floor going 14-for-51 (27.5 percent) and struggled even further from distance going 4-for-22 (18.2 percent). The Lady Hurricanes went 11-for-18 (61.1 percent) from the charity stripe.

With the win, Bradley Central won the right to host the opening round of the region on Friday night at Jim Smiddy Arena. The Bearettes are paired with Cookeville, the fourth-place team from District 6AAA. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
